Alderley Edge to Mottram St Andrew (6.2 miles)

This is a short walk but quite strenuous from Mottram St Andrew up to the top of Alderley Edge. You can make the route easier, and no less delightful, by taking the footpath that runs below Alderley Edge escarpment. If you look on the map above you can see the alternative footpath running along Glaze Hill.

If you take the steeper route to Stormy point you'll be rewarded with fine views towards Derbyshire. On your way down, stop off to read the inscription above the Wizard’s Well: "Drink of this and take thy fill for the water falls by the Wizard's Will." Apparently, it was believed these magical waters were a cure for impotency.

There are lots of old mines around Alderley Edge. You can book trips underground here. There is beautiful woodland all around Alderley Edge and a pleasant café close to the main car park on Macclesfield Road.
